Location: Johnsons Shut-Ins State Park, MO

I made the short road trip to Johnsons Shut-Ins State Park with the hope of finding some ice formations in the cascades as the river ran through the Shut-Ins. After a somewhat extended c-o-l-d spell the previous couple weeks, it seemed there might be a good chance of such a phenomenon being available. I was more than a little surprised to find nada. The only ice I found at all in the park this am was on one of the slopes surrounding the area. Interesting side note…..this is the second time I’ve been skunked on this idea at this park. Early last March, as winter was coming to a close, I made this same trip…..with the same result. I’m beginning to think there’s antifreeze in the water there.

Nevertheless, the granite formations making up the Shut-Ins that interrupt the flow of the East Fork of the Black River and the colors that can be found in the crystal clear water as it dances around the granite intruders are always a treat to shoot.
