This page will be periodically updated as I find new and interesting quotes specific to photography and/or 'creativity' in general. Individual entries will include a  'Date Added' note.

More Creativity vs Technical

Added: 08/14/2020

"Our young men should spend more time considering the composition and merit of their images, and less time with magnifying glasses counting how many bricks and shingles they can resolve."

-from a Paris newspaper article on Daguerreotype photography, from 1841.

Creativity vs Technical

Added: 07/11/2020

"There is plenty of substantial material on the scientific phases of photography, but there is next to nothing useful on its expressive and creative phases. The growth of photography as a mode of expression has been held back by a great deal of tiresome tosh put on paper by quasi-scientific authorities who were without an appreciation of the tradition and aims of art."

   ~William Mortensen

Vision Is Everything

Added: 04/26/2020

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

   — Elliott Erwitt

The Keeper of Memories
Added: 04/26/2020

“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

Aaron Siskind

SO true. It never ceases to amaze me how often seeing an image I've captured can transport me back to the moment it was captured...sometimes remembering the sun on my face, the chill in the air, etc.

Nothing Exists Solely As Its Literal Self

Added: 6/25/2019

"One should not only photograph things for what they are but for what else they are."

Minor White

da Vinci on 'Simplicity'

Added: 06/21/2019

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication."

Leonardo da Vinci

I need to have this one tattoo'd on the inside of my eyelids. :)

Be Willing to Learn.....Always

Added: 01/11/2019

“Once the amateur’s naive approach and willingness to learn fades away, the creative spirit of good photography dies with it. Every professional should remain always in his heart an amateur.”

   ~ Alfred Eisenstaedt

Here's one to which I certainly hope I can adhere. IMO, there's nothing more detrimental to the creative process than reaching a point we think we 'know' everything that needs to be known about  our art. We truly need to be open to new ideas/approaches 'forever'.

Ansel Adams on Sharp Images

Added: 01/11/2019

“There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.”

   ~ Ansel Adams

I just love this one. Brought to you by......The King of Fuzzy Concepts. :)

Scott Adams On Creativity

Added: 01/11/2019

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

   ~Scott Adams

Scott Adams, the creator of the Dilbert comic strip, is credited with this one. I find it intriguing as either sentence in the entire quote could stand on it’s own.
