VDOT Workers Memorial Overlook 001, 03/31/2016

I was headed to the Outer Banks to meet up with a group of photographers for a long weekend of shooting and general good fun. Left STL early the morning prior and drove til I couldn't stand to drive any further...which put me just inside the Virginia state line somewhere. Left the hotel early on this am and hadn't been on I-64 (again) when the sunrise started to light up the sky. Fortunately, I came upon this scenic overlook along the highway and pulled over just in time to catch the sun rays just starting to spill out from the cloud cover and the color just going wild. Chances are, this will be the only decent image I ever capture in the state of Virginia.

I don't recall this specific snow event, but while a snowfall in late March is not unheard of in this part of the world, it is rather rare.

I was walking around a small city park early evening when I noticed the reflections from the lake bouncing around under a pedestrian bridge over the concrete lake in the park. I was particularly attracted by the contrast between the very formal lines of the structure itself vs the very organic patterns created by the reflections.

I recall this scene primarily because of the 2 Mallards that came swimming over in my direction from closer to the other side of the lake and disturbing the otherwise perfectly calm surface that would have left it all but a perfect mirror of the sky were it not for their...'assistance'. They never came too close, but just kept swimming back & forth...going out of the shot for *just* long enough that a couple different times I thought I might get that 'mirror' surface shot. No such luck. If I didn't know better, I'd swear they knew what I was up to and were determined to mess with my shot. Mallards 1....Me...0. :)

I remember capturing just for the irony in the mermaid relaxing and reading a book while the 'pool' around her was bone dry...because the city drains it every fall and doesn't fill it again until mid-May(?) or so.

A small (2-3ft) waterfall discovered while spring water flow was running high in the Castor River Shut-Ins area of Amidon Conservation Area.

When our local lake is full and going over the spillway, it can create an interesting waterfall effect. I remember thinking a 'thousand points of water' while setting this one up.

Probably my favorite color take on a 'moving water' shot...captured along the creek just off the edge of my property that's dry 95% of the year. But we'd had a lot of rain in the week or so prior to this shot, so the creek was running fairly high on this day.

On one of my earliest visits to this state park, I couldn't help but be intrigued by the tic-tac-toe vibe provided by all the vertical trees standing tall and surrounding the one fallen one.

The planetarium in Forest Park is a popular venue for learning about all things 'astro' in the St. Louis area. With the 'ET' sculpture out in front of it, it makes for a wonderfully alien scene...which I 'enhanced' in Photoshop using several different textures.

Fungi city! It was surprising...to me, anyway...to find so many trees in a fairly confined area of the park so laden with fungi/lichen/whatever. While it's certainly not an uncommon sighting in this part of the world, it seemed to be an unusually large grouping covered in the stuff.

One of a number of national cemeteries throughout the country. And if there all as well maintained as this one in St. Louis County, it makes for a wonderful tribute who have given service to our country. I was fortunate to visit when the very earliest of blooming trees signaling the nearness of the coming spring were sprouting white.

Found in a fairly industrial area of the city, I remember trying to figure out why this corner of this building had so many red bricks when overall the entire building had been painted the butter color. My best guess...the corner had experienced some sort of catastrophic collapse and had to be rebuilt, but the owner didn't care to incur the expense of painting the area.(??) I dunno.

Though the St. Louis area is not typically a heavy snow region in winter, it will surprise us occasionally when that snow does occur. On this year, we experienced a storm on the first day of spring that was just enough to screw up traffic in the area.

Forest Park 1136, 03/14/2021

A primarily 'scouting and exercise' visit to Forest Park produced a few good finds as well. These short leaf pines are fairly common further south in MO, but less so here in the STL area. They do make for good subject matter as they tend to be more personality laden than many species...several examples of that in this group. I almost took out the sycamore(?) in the distance dead center, but decided it made a nice juxtaposition against the pines.

Most of the small herd of bison in this park seemed perfectly content in blocking the park road on this day. Fortunately, this one wandered into a grassy area....albeit, taking his good ole time in doing so. :)
