On This day: October 2020
They are being accumulated by month/year simply to minimize the time needed to post them here.
For the month of October, the following were the days for which I was unable to find an image I thought worth sharing...
- October 7th
Reelfoot Lake 0196, 10/31/2018
A bit of a surprise sunrise at Reelfoot Lake in NW Tennessee. One of those mornings where, upon first arrival, the cloud cover appeared to be too heavy to allow much sunrise color to be likely. But every now & then, Mother Nature surprises us and allows enough of a break in the clouds right at the most colorful time of the am. Not 'electric' color, but sometimes a little subtlety is a good thing.
MO Botanical Garden, 10/28/2019
The succulents in the Linnean House at MO Botanical garden are a little tricky to shoot because they're all potted plants that are squeezed rather close together...making it a bit tough to shoot one without capturing bits & pieces of its neighbors.
Victoria Glades Conservation Area 019, 10/25/2011
I'd forgotten all about this location until I started looking for shots captured on 10/25 and this one popped up, And immediately remembered the session because I had intended to shoot sunset. And while this image is at sunset, it's looking almost due east. I had been shooting the normal westerly looking direction for some time, and just because I frequently remind myself to 'Look Behind You' when out shooting, I just happened to do so in time to capture whatever meteorological oddity occurred to allow this 'stripe' in the sky.
This scene was at a corner I turned on to/from every day on my drive to work. The first 4-5 years I resided on the lake property, it was a treat to peek into the woods each fall as this one area seemed to display some wonderful color each year. But I'd never taken the time to bring the camera gear along until this particular year when the color was just 'off the charts'.
Lake Tishomingo 0016, 10/19/2018
Of the 82 gazillion shots I've captured at this location, this one is notable (I think) for the unusual clouds and the fact I did a better job of capturing the sun just as it rises high enough to start skimming the tree tops, but not reaching 'ground level' in much of the shot.
Cuivre River State Park, 10/12/2013
One from the only visit I've made to this state park. And probably one of my favorite autumn color shots for it's simplicity. I recall being a bit disappointed to find how little color there was available this day, but was delighted to find this little scene on the ground with a naturally occurring vignette courtesy of Mother Nature.
Jefferson County, MO 10/09/2011
Captured along Hwy 21 just north of Hillsboro, MO. A little low level fog and the warmth of early morning light along with some autumn colors. Does it get much better.(??)
As I sift through the archives for this photoblog, it's been interesting to see how many 'abstract' images I shot early in the digital age. Not nearly as much in recent years. This one is from my sister's old farmhouse. Like many old farmhouses, this one had several out buildings on the property, and this image was made in one of those.
Don Robinson State Park 0628, 10/30/2020
A morning I visited Don Robinson State Park more for the walk than any potential photo ops. But because there had been some light frost this am, I did drag the camera gear along. And was fortunate to spot one of my favorite woodlands events when the sun finds a narrow path through the tattered tarpaulin that is the forest's canopy to highlight just a small segment of the forest floor.
Garrarus Beach 0002, 10/21/2017
While most of my shooting during this session in County Waterford, Ireland took place from the beach, I did take enough time to climb the hill overlooking the beach. I'm glad I did because, though the cloud cover was thick (top to bottom), there were large holes in it that allowed the sun to light up various areas in the sea. And those brightly lit areas just kept moving around as the clouds moved. And I just happened to be fortunate to be up here when one of those occurrences just happened to light up this sea stack a little way offshore.
I've shared a couple shots from this session in County Cork, but hadn't processed this one previously because I wasn't overly enamored of the big heavy cloud hanging over the peninsula on the right side. But now kind of enjoy the one little glow of the setting sun highlighting a barely visible outline of a man made structure...presumably a home(?).
Lake Tishomingo 0420, 10/11/2020
Autumn color along the feeder creek into our lake during the pandemic year. Overall, it hasn't been a robust autumn color in the St. Louis area. But there have been a few colorful pockets, and as usual this small area is a good one.
Lake Tishomingo 023, 10/08/2011
Autumn on the lake. On a still morning, it can be so serene.
Noah Bud Ogle House 024, 10/23/2013
As many times as I've been to Great Smoky Mountain National Park, this session is my one & only visit to this historical house on the way to Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Though its an 'open concept' floorplan (there's only this room and one other), it was VERY dark in the place. I had to get a flashlight out to dial in the camera sittings looking out its one window to capture some autumn color.
Not long after our group had begun shooting this abbey in County Waterford, Ireland, a HUGE flock of birds all exited the highest tower in this scene simultaneously. It was a very 'Hitchcocky' moment for which I was not set up to shoot. After shooting a number of other angles of the abbey, I stopped here in hopes another of those Hitchcock moments might occur. And I waited...and waited, but no such luck. As it turned out, there was some internal restoration work being done in that highest tower, and we sorta came to the conclusion it was the craftsmen involved in that work arriving to begin the day that created the earlier mass exodus.
Ballycotton Lighthouse 0003, 10/13/2017
One of the very first images captured on the Ireland trip. We were headed towards County Kerry on the far west end of Ireland, but had decided to overnight in County Cork on the way. It was a bit of a tricky session as there was a fair amount of wind along with some intermittent light rain while at this location.
Lake Tishomingo 002, 10/10/2015
Another autumn image captured along the feeder creek into our lake. More often than not, when I've shot from this location, I've included the creek itself to capture the reflections of all this autumn color. But for this one, just the variety of color itself was enough.
